Therapy

My sex and relationship research has always had clear clinical implications, so clinical work was always of interest to me. It wasn’t until mid-career that I was faced with the opportunity to take a sabbatical from my faculty position and complete a clinical fellowship at the University of Kentucky Family Center. Therapy has been a welcome addition to my work, as it allows me to see my research and the research of my colleagues play out in real time. It also has provided me with the opportunity to see gaps in the research when a client comes to me with a problem and there are limited empirical solutions.

I practice within the M Health Fairview Sexual & Gender Health Clinic at the University of Minnesota Medical School, where I work alongside world-renowned therapists and physicians in three main areas: Relationship and Sex Therapy, Compulsive Sexual Behavior, and Transgender Health Services. Additionally, we offer psychosexual assessment, consultation, and medical services. I specialize within the Relationship and Sex Therapy area of care and people who are located within the state of Minnesota can book an appointment with me by calling 612-625-1500.

My approach to therapy is collaborative and tailored to you using a systems-based approach; I draw heavily upon strategies used in emotionally focused therapy (EFT), the Gottman method, narrative therapy and social script theory, and I value the integration of solution-focused approaches when appropriate. I work from a social justice and intersectional feminist lens in my therapy, education, and research. I completed the Intensive Sex Therapy training program at University of Guelph, am certified as a sexuality educator through the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT), and have an extensive background in LGBTQIA+ health; I am a sex positive LGBTQIA+ inclusive clinician.
